Nach „umfangreichen Konsultationen in der Bundesregierung und mit Experten sowie mit den Landesgouverneuren“ wurden diese Schritte laut Vizekanzler Werner Kogler (Grüne) vereinbart.
Die Lockerung für Weihnachten wird am 24. und 25. Dezember fortgesetzt. Bundeskanzler Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) warnte davor, dass die Sitzungen so klein wie möglich sein sollten. Ab dem 26. Dezember werden die Maßnahmen wieder verschärft, sagte Kurz. Es wird wieder ganztägige Ausstiegsbeschränkungen geben. Darüber hinaus bleiben Handel, körperfreundliche Dienstleistungen (Friseur usw.), Restaurants und Kultur bis zum 17. Januar geschlossen. Nach den Ferien verbringen die Schulen bis zum 17. Die seitdem geltenden Maßnahmen – Schulen und Einzelhandel durften wieder öffnen, nur Restaurants und Hotels blieben geschlossen – reichten nicht aus, um die Infektionen langfristig zu bremsen: Zuletzt gab es rund 2.600 Neuinfektionen und fast Täglich 120 Todesfälle.
